Icon - Richard the Lionheart

Richard I (1157 – 1199) was King of England from 1189 to 1199.

He also ruled as Duke of Normandy, Duke of Aquitaine, Duke of Gascony, and various counties of France.
He was the son of King Henry II of England and Eleanor of Aquitaine.

Born and raised in England, he spent  most of his adult life in France.

He was a great military leader and warrior, thus his name: Richard the Lionheart.
he was seen as a pious hero by his subjects, and during the Third Crusade he gained considerable victories against the muslim devil, Saladin.

At the Battle of Gisors in 1198, Richard took "Dieu et mon Droit" , "God and my Right", as his motto;
(this motto is still used by the British monarchy today).

He was buried at  Fontevraud Abbey, Anjou, France.

Richard the Lionheart is an enduring iconic figure both in England and in France.
